Module 6: Managing Your Privacy and Security Online

Introduction

Some of the most insidious cyber intrusions are ones that enable threat actors to monitor their target’s locations and communications, access the data on the target’s device, and enable device functions such as the microphone and camera―all without the victim’s knowledge. Often, threat actors are able to gain access to their target’s device to carry out this deep invasion of privacy by crafting convincing messages that cause their target to click on a link, allowing the threat actor to access to the target’s account or install malware. These social engineering attempts are often successful due to the amount of personal information publicly available online that enables threat actors to make highly personalized and convincing messages.

Module 6 helps users understand how to limit the amount of personal information that can be found online and understand how to protect themselves against intrusions that threaten their privacy and security.

Topics

Module 6 covers the following topics:

  1. Topic 6.0 – Limit your digital footprint
  2. Topic 6.1 – Manage your online presence
  3. Topic 6.2 – Protect yourself against tracking technologies and spyware with best practices

Topic 6.0 Limit Your Digital Footprint

Disable your advertising identifier (Ad ID) to help to reduce your digital footprint.

Topic 6.1 Manage your Online Presence

In addition to being aware of information you share online, manage the settings on your social media accounts to better increase your privacy and security.

Topic 6.2 Follow Cybersecurity Best Practices to Protect Yourself from Tracking Technologies and Spyware

Applying lessons earned in Project Upskill will make it harder for threat actors to install tracking technology on your device.
