This updated advisory is a follow-up to the original advisory titled ICSA-22-242-10 PTC Kepware KEPServerEX that was published August 30, 2022, to the ICS webpage at www.cisa.gov/ics.

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow an attacker to crash the device or remotely execute arbitrary code.
4. TECHNICAL DETAILS
4.1 AFFECTED PRODUCTS
The following PTC products are affected by vulnerabilities found in Kepware KEPServerEX, a connectivity platform:
- Kepware KEPServerEX: Versions prior to 6.12
- ThingWorkx Kepware Server: Versions prior to 6.12
- ThingWorkx Industrial Connectivity: All versions
- OPC-Aggregator: Versions prior to 6.12
- ThingWorkx Kepware Edge: Versions 1.4 and prior
The following products are known to be vulnerable:
- Rockwell Automation KEPServer Enterprise: Versions prior to v6.12
- GE Digital Industrial Gateway Server: Versions prior to v7.612
- Software Toolbox TOP Server: Versions prior to v6.12
4.2 VULNERABILITY OVERVIEW
4.2.1 HEAP-BASED BUFFER OVERFLOW CWE-122
Specifically crafted OPC UA messages transmitted to the server could allow an attacker to crash the server and leak data.
CVE-2022-2848 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 9.1 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H).
4.2.2 STACK-BASED BUFFER OVERFLOW CWE-121
Specifically crafted OPC UA messages transmitted to the server could allow an attacker to crash the server and remotely execute code.
CVE-2022-2825 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 9.8 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).

Vera Mens, Uri Katz, and Sharon Brizinov of Claroty Research, working with Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative, reported these vulnerabilities to PTC.
PTC recommends updating to the latest versions of the following products:
- Kepware KEPServerEX should upgrade to v6.12 or later
- ThingWorx Kepware Server should upgrade to v6.12 or later
- ThingWorx Industrial Connectivity should upgrade to ThingWorx Kepware Server v6.12 or later
- OPC-Aggregator should upgrade to v6.12 or later
- ThingWorx Kepware Edge: Upgrade to v1.5 or later

PTC recommends upgrading the following products to their latest versions where feasible:

CISA recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of these vulnerabilities. Specifically, users should:
- Minimize network exposure for all control system devices and/or systems, and ensure they are not accessible from the Internet.
- Locate control system networks and remote devices behind firewalls and isolate them from business networks.
- When remote access is required, use secure methods, such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), recognizing VPNs may have vulnerabilities and should be updated to the most current version available. Also recognize VPN is only as secure as its connected devices.
