Description

The Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) takes a holistic approach to helping states and communities improve their cybersecurity posture and establish a “culture of cybersecurity.” One example that demonstrates UTSA’s work to establish a culture of cybersecurity is Project Xander—a program that allows UTSA students to gain hands-on experience assessing cybersecurity risk for under resourced organizations (including nonprofits, small businesses, and local governments) while receiving mentorship from local cybersecurity professionals. Through a series of courses, students learn to assess an organization’s security controls, plans, and policies, as well as perform penetration testing, wireless scans, and phishing tests. Project Xander is paving a way forward for increased cyber awareness as the model is expanding to high schools, community colleges, and universities across the United States.
