Deploying an unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) unit, or drone, requires collaboration across multiple agencies. The latest National Emergency Communications Plan (NECP) Spotlight demonstrates how the NECP's recommendations enhance coordination and effective usage of public safety communications resources across jurisdictions.

The Virginia Beach Police Department Aviation Unit developed a 40-hour in-house training to address the knowledge gap that other city agencies had with operating drones.  The training includes methods of safe conduct, crew resource management, missions and fleet management, operational guidelines, understanding of the Federal Aviation Administration, presenting UAS-collected data, and ensuring compliance with constitutional protections and state legislation.

To learn more about how Virginia Beach’s city departments and agencies benefited from building a drone program, read the latest NECP Spotlight by visiting: cisa.gov/necp.
