Election Security Training

Personal Security Considerations for Election Workers Training Video

This video helps election workers assess their security posture and provides options to consider whether they are on or off the job. It includes actionable recommendations and resources intended to mitigate threats to an election worker’s personal safety.

CISA offers trainings at no cost to election infrastructure stakeholders. We can host stand alone events or present at existing events, such as election official association meetings or state security conferences. All training offerings are customizable and can be tailored to meet specific stakeholder needs. Trainings are available in person and virtually, usually running 30 to 90 minutes per training topic. If needed, CISA can provide an online platform for virtual sessions.

These CISA training videos unpack specific risks to election security and provide tailored strategies to mitigate those risks. These videos can be used for individual viewing or group training events.

Overview of ransomware, including attack vectors and impacts, with an emphasis on election infrastructure related risks and available resources.

CISA and USPIS Election Mail Security Resources

CISA and the USPIS released a specialized training video for election officials, to address the increasing need for secure handling of election-related mail, particularly in light of potential physical threats, including hazardous materials.

Election Security: Building Trust through Secure Practices

Identifies strategies to manage risks to election infrastructure through the three Ts of elections: Tracking, Testing, and Telling the Story.

Non-Confrontational Techniques for Election Workers

Introduces techniques to help election workers recognize potentially escalating situations, determine if emergency response is needed, safely de-escalate, and report appropriately within their organization or to law enforcement.

Election Security Risk in Focus: Phishing

Overview of phishing, including types, detection, and impacts, with an emphasis on election infrastructure related risks and available resources.

Active Shooter Preparedness

Enhances awareness of, and response to, an active shooter incident.

In-Person or Virtual Trainings by Request

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) offers trainings at no cost to election infrastructure stakeholders. All training offerings are customizable and can be tailored to meet specific stakeholder needs. Trainings are available both in-person and virtually, and usually run between 30 to 90 minutes. This training provides an overview of the election security risk landscape and highlights CISA services and resources available to election infrastructure stakeholders. 

Securing Local Election Offices

Introduces considerations and recommendations to help election workers mitigate physical security risks to election infrastructure.

Election Security Risk in Focus: Artificial Intelligence and Foreign Malign Influence Operations

This training outlines the tactics of foreign malign influence operations, including the use of artificial intelligence, to raise awareness and help election infrastructure stakeholders increase resilience against these evolving tactics.

Bomb Threat Preparedness

Provides participants with interactive exercises and case histories of what happened during bombing incidents to familiarize participants with the steps necessary to prepare for and respond to a bomb threat.

Suspicious Items Identification and Response

Provides public safety and security professionals with the knowledge and skills to identify suspicious activity for bombing prevention related to a facility/system or a planned or unplanned event.

Emergency Communications Preparedness

When critical seconds count, you need to communicate efficiently. Learn how to use Priority Telecommunications Services (PTS) - a suite of technical tools to give calls priority when networks are congested or compromised - during extreme events.

Communications “PACE” Planning

The Primary, Alternate, Contingency, and Emergency (PACE) planning model creates a framework for having a backup communications plan. This concept is important for continuity of operations and our ability to communicate.

Election Security Risk in Focus: Insider Threats

Overview of resources on insider threat mitigation for election infrastructure stakeholders, with an emphasis on improving existing insider threat mitigation practices.

Operations Security for Election Workers

This training provides operations security (OPSEC) considerations for election workers, including real-world examples and recommendations for reducing risks.   

Tabletop Exercises

Use these exercises to practice incident response plans and demonstrate the impact election security threats can have on the entire elections process.

Tabletop the Vote

Tabletop the Vote is CISA’s yearly national election security exercise. Federal partners, state and local election officials, and vendors come together to identify and share best practices and areas for improvement related to election security.

Election Security CISA Tabletop Exercise Packages (CTEPs)

Election Security CTEPs are customizable documents that include template exercise objectives, scenarios, and discussion questions as well as a collection of references and resources.
